If you’ve ever craved a trip that strips away daily stress and drops you directly into raw, awe-inspiring nature, Ecuador is it. In just two weeks you can move from high-altitude colonial streets to misty thermal springs, ending on remote islands where sea lions lounge like old friends and the ocean reminds you just how huge and wonderful the world is.

Before you go

Ecuador & Galápagos, at a glance

The Route

Quito & Cuenca on the mainland, then San Cristóbal and Santa Cruz in the Galápagos — high altitude to open ocean in one trip.

Inter-Island Transport

Speedboats between islands are a 2-hour ride and genuinely rough — take a motion sickness pill and sit toward the center of the boat.

Altitude in Quito

Landing at 2,800m gives you a subtle physical and mental pause — a built-in reminder to slow down for a day or two.

Food & Dining

Tasting-menu fine dining in Quito alongside $2.50 market soups in Cuenca — the range is part of the fun.

Cash vs. Card

Ecuador uses USD. Cards often carry a 5–7% surcharge and card readers on the islands can be spotty — keep small bills on hand.

Booking Style

Most local operators respond in minutes on WhatsApp. Walking into island agencies in person is often easier than booking months ahead.

Budgeting

Estimated daily costs

$85–110

Per day, USD · blended mainland + Galápagos average, food + local transport + mid-range stay + tours

Note for Nupur: this is an estimate blending mainland Ecuador (cheaper) with Galápagos (pricier — park fees, boat tours, island food) — swap in your actual numbers before publishing.

The Journey & The Feeling

14-day Ecuador & Galápagos route

High-Altitude Charm & Culinary Magic

Photo: soaking at Papallacta Hot Springs as the chilly mountain air settles over the pools. Landing in Quito gives you a subtle physical and mental pause — a reminder to slow down and breathe. A 9-course dinner at Somos, paired with wines and an unforgettable oyster course, was the highlight of the city; Urko and Shibumi are also worth booking for incredible local flavors.

Cuenca’s Cobblestone Warmth

Photo: cobblestone streets after a fresh rain. Moving to Cuenca felt like a warm embrace — wrapping up in a soft alpaca sweater, sipping hot chocolate with locals, and eating $2.50 market soups gave me that deeply cozy, at-home feeling travel rarely gifts you.

Sunset at Playa Carola

Photo: golden light over dozens of wild sea lions lazy-flopped across the sand. Standing on the beach with a solo traveler I’d just met, watching the sun sink into the Pacific, hit me right in the chest — a sudden, overwhelming realization that this wasn’t a movie, this was my real life.

Swimming into the Wild at Kicker Rock

Photo: the deep ocean gap between two massive rock walls. Gliding through the channel and looking down through crystal water to see sea turtles, eagle rays, white-tip sharks, and a family of hammerheads floating silently beneath us was a breathtaking reminder of how peaceful the ocean really is.

Interpretation Center & Playa Tijeretas

Photo: coastal trails leading down to a swim with sea lions. A free, lovely walk through the Interpretation Center’s trails to Playa Tijeretas — no booking needed, just walk up and go.

Standing on Top of Bartholomé Island

Photo: volcanic formations stretching into turquoise water from the summit overlook. Climbing the wooden stairs under the blazing sun after a 5:45am wake-up brought us to a view that barely looks real, followed by a swim on a secluded, dreamlike beach — completely worth the early start.

Tours & Activities

What to book, and who to book it with

Don’t stress about booking every day tour months in advance. Walking into local agencies on the islands or chatting with your hostel lets you ask questions, get a feel for the guide, and easily haggle for better prices.

Kicker Rock Snorkel Tour — San Cristóbal

Booked with EcoTours Galápagos. 10/10 must-do — our guide Arianna made everyone feel calm and safe. Includes boat snacks, lunch, snorkel gear, and a swim to a remote beach.

Bartholomé Island Day Trip — Santa Cruz

Booked via Galápagos Dreams Agency, ~$230 USD. A bit pricey, but you sail on a power boat, get a fantastic guided geology tour, and see views you’ll never forget.

Interpretation Center & Trails — San Cristóbal

Self-guided, walked up directly. Free and peaceful — a lovely coastal walk leading to Playa Tijeretas for a swim with sea lions.

Historic Walking Tour — Quito

Booked through Viajero Hostel. Easy and engaging — a great way to connect with other travelers and understand the city’s heart.

Extend The Trip

Should you add more time?

Yes — 100%. While two weeks was a soul-filling escape, I left wanting just a little more time to soak it all in.

Extend the islands (7–10 days)

Give yourself extra days in the Galápagos to take a boat over to Isla Isabela for laid-back island living, or North Seymour for bird watching.

Mainland adventures

With extra days on the mainland, add the Quilotoa Loop crater trek, Cotopaxi National Park, or a beach and surf pitstop in Montañita.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Should I bring cash or card to Ecuador?

Cash. Ecuador uses USD, but credit cards often incur a 5–7% surcharge, and card readers on the islands can be spotty. Keep small bills on hand for transport, tours, and markets.

How do I book Galápagos tours?

Embrace old-school booking — most local tour operators respond in minutes via WhatsApp rather than email, and walking into an agency in person often gets you a better rate than booking online in advance.

How bad is the motion sickness on inter-island boats?

Plan for it. The inter-island speedboats are a wild 2-hour roller coaster ride — take a sea sickness pill before boarding and sit toward the center of the boat.
