Accommodation is usually your second-biggest expense on a trip under two weeks — and on anything a month or longer, it’s often the biggest line item. Before defaulting to “whatever’s cheapest” or “whatever looks nicest in photos,” it’s worth deciding what you’re actually optimizing for. For some people that’s a private bathroom. For others it’s a common room full of strangers to grab dinner with. Neither is wrong — they just point you toward different stays.

      The constant

The one thing that matters at every budget

Hostels and luxury hotels are, more often than not, very well located — they tend to sit where travelers can actually reach them easily. Mid-range hotels are the category where this is least consistent: sometimes the location is great, sometimes it’s exactly why the price was lower. It’s worth checking specifically, not assuming.
