The First Trip That Changed Everything
M. was 25, living in Canada, and had never left the continent — let alone traveled alone. She’d been following along for a while before she finally messaged me. This is her first solo trip, in her words and mine.
M. had always wanted to travel solo. She just hadn’t found the version of “safe and affordable” that made the leap feel possible — until she started following along here and decided to ask for help planning her first trip out of Canada.
The turn
From nervous to excited
The wanting was never the problem. The nerves were.
“I followed Nupur’s travel adventures for a while and was looking for somewhere affordable and safe,” she told me. “I was 25 at the time and never traveled to Europe from Canada before! I’ve always dreamed of traveling alone but was really nervous of the idea.”
That’s the exact spot most people stall in — dreaming about the trip and dreading it at the same time, waiting for the nerves to clear before they book anything. They don’t clear on their own. What shifted it for M. wasn’t a pep talk; it was having a specific country, a route that already worked, and someone who had walked it. Once the plan stopped being hypothetical, the nerves had less to hold onto — and what was underneath them was excitement.
At a glance
What this first trip actually looked like
Three firsts
First trip to Europe, first solo trip, first hostel stay — all at once.
The itinerary
Followed ~80% of a ready-made itinerary instead of building one from scratch.
Not alone
Met another solo traveler at her Lagos hostel and explored together for two days.
The route
Why Portugal
I suggested Portugal. It’s one of the easiest countries to travel alone in — cheap, walkable, and forgiving of a first-timer’s mistakes. M. built her route around Lisbon, Sintra, and Lagos, and leaned on my itinerary for most of it.
“I’d say I followed about 80% of her itinerary,” she told me. “It was easy to make modifications and was a solid base template to use for my trip planning. It made planning so easy — I didn’t have to spend countless hours scrolling through other travel blogs to make my own.”

The parts she didn’t plan
The beaches in Lagos were the highlight — M. is a photographer, and some of her favorite shots from the whole trip came from there. Lagos is also where she stayed at Top City Hostel and Suites on my recommendation — her first hostel, ever. She ended up spending two days exploring with another solo female traveler she met there.

The beaches, and Top City Hostel and Suites — her first hostel, ever.

One of the three stops she built her route around.
“It was an amazing first solo trip,” M. said. “It was cheap, I felt safe, and it honestly gave me so much more confidence to continue solo traveling.” She’s since passed the itinerary on to friends planning their own trips to Portugal.
This is exactly why I do this work — not to hand someone a checklist, but to make that first leap feel possible.
